Neighbors helping neighbors isn’t too unusual. But when a town decides to mobilize a community-wide effort in behalf of those who need assistance, something special can happen! That is the story of People In Action at Dewitt’s Springfield Garden Apartments. Operated as a service program by the Town of DeWitt’s Park and Recreation Department, staff salaries are funded by the Town.
What kind of programs are in place to help at People In Action?
- Pre-school program specializing in foundational academic and socialization skills for children just beginning their new country’s language
- English As Second Language instruction to adults to help overcome language obstacles
- After-School Program specializing in supervised homework sessions for DeWitt’s at-risk youngsters
- Bringing mentors together with young people to encourage pursuit of GED’s and preparation for the job field
- Senior programs that include fine art instruction, personal finance seminars and computer classes
- Operates CNY’s largest Food Pantry
How can we help? Beyond our Mission of the Month financial support we can donate school supplies and be a “homework helper” for the after school program.
